As the global economy increasingly embraces digital transformation, electronic signatures are emerging as a pivotal tool for streamlining processes, enhancing security, and promoting environmental sustainability. By eliminating the need for paper-based documentation, digital signatures contribute to a more efficient, eco-friendly, and secure business landscape.

Bangladesh, through the implementation of its Information & Communication Technology Act in 2006 (ICT Act) has allowed the adoption of digital signatures into administrative, commercial, and societal landscapes making it to the list of countries to venture into digital transformation.

Historically, Bangladesh's international trade has been burdened by the inefficiencies and errors inherent in paper-based processes. As the nation aspires to become a "Smart Bangladesh" by 2041, a fundamental transformation of its trade practices is imperative. Electronic signatures offer a promising solution, capable of streamlining trade procedures, reducing paperwork, and enhancing overall efficiency.

To fully realize the benefits of electronic records and signatures in Bangladesh, the following recommendations are essential:

  • Strengthen Legal Framework: Ensure that the ICT Act provides explicit provisions for the acceptance of electronic signatures across all sectors, including government entities.

  • Recognize Reputable Providers: Recognize reputable and experienced global organizations with expertise in electronic signature technologies to provide reliable services.

  • Promote Electronic Trade Documents: Encourage the electronic presentation of export and import-related documents to streamline trade processes and reduce inefficiencies.

  • Integrate Systems: Implement an integrated electronic trade documents acceptance system to facilitate faster clearance and reduce administrative burdens.

The future of Bangladesh lies in its digital transformation, and electronic records and signatures are the cornerstone. Embracing these technologies can catapult the nation into the digital age, driving economic development, enhancing governance, and empowering its citizens.
